About Us

Mission Statement

Young Scholar is a non-profit community resource. We are dedicated to helping students with their transition into post-secondary education, whether it be financially or otherwise. Through Young Scholar, students will find useful information including but not limited to, application writing techniques, interview skills, resume building, study tips, and insight from fellow students on taking care of one's well-being and mental health.

We hope to debunk the myth that you must be a straight A student from a top university or private school to receive adequate opportunities. We aim to build Young Scholar to be one of the top primary resources for students recommended by parents and education providers alike.

What We Do

Provide free online resources

We provide dozens of articles on academics, scholarship applications, and mental health that can be accessed anytime, anywhere. If you would like to request for a specific topic, feel free to contact us!

Young Scholar Award

We offer an annual, in-house $1000 scholarship open to all Canadian high school students. All students are eligible to apply as long as they are in grades 9 - 12 or are in CEGEP.

Project Noise Award

A new, in-house $500 scholarship to be offered for 2019 open to Canadian students at any level. All Canadian students who can provide documentation that they are receiving some sort of mental health treatment are eligible to apply.

Host Events

We host a range of events, whether it be for networking, interview prep, LinkedIn headshots, or just for fun! To keep up to date with events in your city, please visit our Events page.

History

Young Scholar was established by Sherry Wong in 2014 after graduating high school with over $130,000 in scholarship offers. With the goal of creating a free community resource run by students and for students, Sherry started writing articles on how to successfully apply for scholarships and post-secondary institutions. She believed that scholarships are not just about the money. Winning major scholarship awards can earn you the recognition to distinguish you from the crowd; making admission to renowned universities and professional schools easier. However, it will take considerable time and effort to search, prepare, and apply for available scholarships. Since then, Young Scholar has expanded to other topics that students may find insightful. From portfolio building and offering an in-house scholarship, to academics and mental health (see Project Noise), Young Scholar has become a go-to resource for students and parents.
